The Third Annual Extravaganza is getting closer. Please join us on May 12th, 2011 in the JHS Eagle Talon Rooms. It is a great atmosphere that all will enjoy. In our April 19th meeting we discussed our Extravaganza plans and came up with comittees. Guild members feel free to add to our decor by bringing table clothes, fabric, and lamps.
Today is the last day to turn in extravaganza entries. No late submissions will be accepted. We hope to break our record for submissions. Please join us at the extravaganza on May 12th, 2011. $5 for entrance and food and drinks are extra, visit the writing contest page for more details.
Today we discussed the writing workshop we are having on Saturday April 9th at 5:00 p.m. at Panera Bread Company. Geordan brought snacks! Our prompt was free writing; it can be found on the prompt page. Remember the DEADLINE IS APRIL 12TH for the extravaganza.
(if you have questions email President Ashley at [email protected]) This week in the Guild, we focused on writing research papers. Sometimes you can't just go by the book. Structure, structure, structure is not always the way to go. The focus should be on content rather than structure, every teacher is going to want it differently.
The extravaganza is comming soon, and the deadline for entry is approaching. Please visit the writing contest page for more details. Well, today's meeting was a great one. We began with some extravaganza news, and are preparing for the Third Annual (yes, it's number three) Writing Contest. If you are a Joplin High School student and would like to enter please visit the Extravaganza section of our webpage or Mrs. Jarrett in room C104. We also read a poem titled Invictus (posted below), and had a discussion on purpose. This conversation sparked deep thought from most on his or her purpose in life and how things can change over time. Briefly we spoke about the writer Sora Neal Hurston and her purpose in writing. The Guild recommends you take the time to refrence some of her work, which can be found on the links page of this site. Thanks to everyone supporting the Writers' Guild and to Nana for providing snacks at todays meeting.
Invictus Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. William Ernest Henley Happy New Year everyone! I hope you are having a good time. To refresh some memories I would recommend you to visit Flickr.com and search for joplin 1902. You will get to see the change our Joplin has gone through from then till today. Don't forget to see our former school which is shown in the back of one picture!
Today we watched a movie in first person narrative. We won't have a club meeting next week. Happy Break!
Writers presented there own characters that they had made up. Each character was to have been presented as if the character were a real person. The writers had fun listening to the orignal ideas of many. Later we also got to listen to some very creative poems : ) We decided that the meeting before Christmas we will have a Christmas party in which members could bring snacks and watch a movie that was in first person limited point of view (this would help us in our writings so make sure to come to the meeting).
In today's meeting the prompt was given to write a poem using scrambled words. Please look at the prompt section for the prompt.
